Coaching a Toddler to Develop into an 'British Gentleman' – Does It Justify the Investment?

Child education concept
The firm responsible for the advertisement explains that what looks like "extravagance or peculiarity" is truly "deliberate investment in initial learning".

"A family based in North London seeks an exceptional and experienced instructor to support their youngest child on his initial journey to turning into an British gentleman."

Looking at this post, you might readily miss the term "first-steps" as simple a turn of phrase.

However, it might be the crucial part of this unusual position posting, as it seeks to recruit a teacher for a one-year-old.

Numerous of submissions have now been sent in since the unnamed family advertised their call for the highly paid tutor, who needs to be "an exceptional individual".

Over the last few weeks, the listing has gained attention throughout the media, with numerous questioning why?

Forward-Thinking Method

The CEO, CEO and founder of Tutors International, which is helping the family in their search, stated that notwithstanding early skepticism, he considered the idea "visionary", and "advanced".

When he consulted the family, he mentioned they recognized the unconventional nature of their request, and how immature their son is.

However, they explained that they "preferred not to postpone any longer" to hire a tutor, as they had waited until their firstborn was five, and by that point "cultural bias had already set in".

What exactly does the family refer to by "cultural predisposition"?

It's "all-encompassing", the expert answered. "The manner you eat, how you speak".

He explained the elder child had adopted "really subtle, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had taken on their cultural norms. The family explained to the consultant they hoped to prevent history to happen again with their new baby.

The intention: To bring in a UK tutor, who should speak with RP, to shape the baby from the very start.

Tutoring discussion
The education firm say the advert has initiated a wider discussion about how parents view education, privilege and the role of family background in development.

Osmotic Learning

"A lot of the education at the outset here is kind of absorbed naturally," stated Adam.

It's via this subtle influence that the family are hoping the child will acquire the British traits they aim to impart.

Adam said the tutor had to be somebody who attended "prestigious academies – comparable categories of schools as the family hope to send their son to".

"The tutor must be the appropriate candidate, they'll be carrying out things they may not realize they're doing, effortlessly," he added.

Cost Not Relevant

The family informed him the selected educator should ideally also have understanding of or enthusiasm in riding, alpine skiing, the arts and instrumental training so as to shape the child in a diverse set of passions.

More than that though, he stated the family wanted the tutor to enrol the child on a selection of classes so the child would be "pony-riding and learning an instrument by the time they are around three years old".

In the family's perspective, helping their son become a "British gentleman" will bring about achievement and open doors.

"For all the pros and cons of that, because it's definitely a class statement," he comments.

Yet, in spite of all this guidance in "UK identity", would the child pick up alleged cultural influence from the international family he lives with in any case?

"Yes", answered the CEO. "They understand this could fail, but they've just taken the perspective of, 'let's give it a go and we should start as early as we can', because the cost of it is not a concern," he explained.

Impractical

There are some in the private teaching field who have these concerns.

An education leader, CEO and founder of an educational organization, who provides personal educators, wrote that "the development of adopting dual cultures, or in fact, becoming oneself, is something that must be grown into, not manufactured."

He wrote that he had relocated from Asia to the United Kingdom at the period of seven, and had been raised understanding and embodying dual heritages. He progressed to learn at a prestigious UK institution.

The executive was the first individual hailing from mainland China to be chosen to the position of Finance Head of the Cambridge Union Society.

"The concept that an individual can act as a embodiment of English culture, an individual who can somehow transplant the qualities of a British gentleman onto a 12-month-old child, appears idealistic and unrealistic," he stated.

"Based on my background, having a quintessentially British tutor from infancy will not automatically create the goal they want.

"I never had such a tutor, and nevertheless I have been privileged enough to experience several of the situations they hope for their son."

He stated: "The reality is, cultural identity should not be forced from the outside; it must be selected, and it must come from within."

Purchasing UK Culture

Naturally, Britishness is something the expert thinks can be taught – and commercialized.

"I believe the situation that the world holds us in this regard is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
