The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
