A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using these drugs should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the way of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
