No fewer than thirteen people perish and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in national works. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was requested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
