Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
