Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences washed out by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
